Garment Care
We recommend that the following steps are followed to ensure the good condition and longevity of your William Shaw garments:
- All garments should be washed or dry cleaned according to the care label inside.
- Wool blend garments can be machine washed inside out on a delicate cycle.
- Only wash using a wool wash detergent, never use an enzyme-based detergent.
- At no stage should garments be left to soak.
- Your garments should be left to dry flat, in the shade on a clotheshorse. Do not hang on a clothesline with pegs or on a coat hanger.
- Do not tumble dry your garment.
- Garments should be clean when stored, especially in warm and humid climates.
- Ensure your garment is stored neatly folded and well ventilated with insect deterrents.
Caring for William Shaw Woolblend Garments
Classics: 80% Wool/20% Nylon range
Wool and woolblend products are unique in their benefits to the wearer. Due to its natural properties wool is warmer, hard wearing, breathes better and has a high resistance to water. Woolblend products must be washed or dry cleaned according to the care label inside the garment.
William Shaw woolblend garments can be machine washed inside out on a delicate cycle with a water temperature no hotter than 40° maximum. It is critical that they are only washed using a wool wash detergent, as an enzyme based detergent will damage the proteins in the wool as they are designed to attack the protein based stains. At no stage should woolblend garments be left to soak.
You may choose to hand wash your garment if you are not confident about using the washing machine on a wool or gentle cycle. Mix your wool wash detergent with warm water (40° max), and squeeze the water through the garment. Rinse your garment in cold water till the garment no longer has a soapy texture, this may take several rinses. You may choose to spin the excess water out on the spin cycle in the washing machine.
It is best to dry your garments flat, and in the shade on a clotheshorse. Do not hang on a clothesline or a coat hanger, as this will affect the shape of the garment. Do not tumble dry your garment; this will have adverse affects on the sizing of your garment.
All wool garments benefit from a gentle press. Once your garment is dry, use a steam iron on the wool setting and iron carefully.
You may choose to have your garment professionally dry cleaned. This can be done safely provided the garment is dry cleaned in any solvent other than trichloroethylene.
Garments need to be clean when stored, especially where the climate is warm and humid. Insects are attracted to the protein in wool and or any soiled area of the garment. Although yarn is treated with products to help resist damage from insects, this will only kill the insects upon ingestion of the fibres. Ensure your garment is stored neatly folded and well ventilated with insect deterrents.
